What is Discourse? An open-source community platform

Discourse is a community platform that combines the features of online forums, chat, mailing lists, and knowledge bases. You can organize conversations by topic, category, and tag, and accumulate them as searchable information assets.

Chat services like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Discord are good for quick daily communication. Discourse, on the other hand, excels at organizing important discussions and decisions by theme in a way that lets people who join later follow the history.

  • You want to organize information scattered throughout your organization or community
  • You find yourself answering the same questions repeatedly
  • You want to create a place for product support and user-to-user interaction
  • You want to preserve organizational knowledge rather than relying on chat alone
  • You don’t want your data locked into a specific service

Differences between Discourse and Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Discord

Comparison ItemDiscourseSlack, Teams, Discord
Unit of InformationOrganized around topicsCentered on chronological messages
Referencing Past InformationEasy to find through search, categories, and tagsTends to get lost over time
Visibility RangeCan be set from public to completely privatePrimarily used within organizations or groups

Suitable Use CasesUser communities, Q&A, knowledge sharingDaily communication, brief exchanges, in-meeting chat

You don’t need to choose one or the other. You can use both: chat for daily communication, and Discourse for discussions and knowledge you’ll want to refer back to later, depending on your purpose.

Key features of Discourse

  1. Organize discussions and knowledge by topic
Information is grouped by subject matter, so you can refer back to past discussions and decisions later.
  2. Powerful search functionality
Search across posts, users, categories, tags, and more to find the information you need.
  3. Flexible public and private settings
Set viewing and posting permissions by category or group, and combine a public community with internal-use areas.
  4. Extensibility through themes and plugins
Adjust the design and add features like Q&A, voting, events, and data analytics.
  5. Integration with external services
Use SSO, APIs, and webhooks to connect with existing systems and workflows.
  6. Mobile and email support
Participate in your community from anywhere through desktop, mobile, or email.
  7. Open source
Source code is public and continuously reviewed and improved. You can export your data and migrate to another environment.

Discourse hosting and self-hosting

Discourse offers official hosting provided by its developer, as well as the option of self-hosting the open-source version on your own or any cloud environment. While self-hosting provides greater configuration flexibility, it requires ongoing management including server administration, security updates, backups, and email delivery.

Good Loop combines the flexibility of self-hosting with the peace of mind of a managed hosting service. We support not only implementation at launch, but also maintenance and operation after going live, all in Japanese.

  • Setup of custom domains, SSL, and email delivery
  • Design of public and private categories, groups, and permissions
  • Integration with external systems including SSO, APIs, and webhooks
  • Implementation of themes, components, and plugins
  • Updates, backups, monitoring, and incident response
  • Implementation on intranets or designated environments

Main use cases for Discourse

User communities for products and services

You can bring together user questions and information exchange, product feedback, and use case sharing in one place.

Customer support and Q&A

You can build a support foundation where users can find answers themselves by publishing frequently asked questions and resolved inquiries.

Internal communication and knowledge sharing

Accumulate cross-departmental discussions, business know-how, and decision-making history so new members can refer to past information.

Membership communities

You can vary the viewing range according to membership tier or role, and use it as a place for limited information sharing and interaction.

Frequently asked questions about Discourse implementation and pricing

Can I use Discourse in Japanese?

Yes. The interface and notification emails can be displayed in Japanese. Good Loop provides Japanese language support from initial setup through ongoing technical questions during operation.

Can I self-host Discourse?

Yes. Discourse is published as open-source software and can be deployed on your own servers or in any cloud environment you choose. In addition to environment setup, Good Loop also supports ongoing operations including updates, backups, and monitoring.

Is Discourse free? What’s the difference from Discourse’s official Free plan?

Discourse officially offers a Free plan available under certain conditions, including the discourse.group domain and limited to 2 staff members. Good Loop’s service is designed for organizations that need a custom domain, flexible permission settings, external authentication, theme and plugin customization, and ongoing Japanese language operational support.

Why does it start at 15,000 yen per month?

Good Loop’s pricing is not for Discourse software licensing, but for our managed service that includes a custom domain environment, updates, backups, basic configuration, and Japanese email support.

Can I use Discourse with a custom domain?

Yes. All Good Loop plans support custom domains. You can use any domain or subdomain you already own, and we’ll help with DNS and SSL configuration.

Can I see a demo?

You can view Discourse Japan. We’re also happy to discuss verification environments before implementation.

Can I run it completely private or for internal use only?

Yes. You can make the entire site private, or set viewing and posting permissions by category or group. We can also discuss deployment on your intranet.

Can I migrate data from an existing service?

We support migration between Discourse instances as well as from other forums and community services. We’ll review your data format and volume and provide a quote.

Can I use AI or automatic translation?

Yes. We’ll set up connections to AI services and translation services based on the features you need and your usage volume. API fees for external services may apply separately.

What payment methods are available?

You can pay by credit card or bank transfer.

Is there a discount for educational institutions or nonprofits?

Yes. We offer pricing at 60% of the standard rate. We may ask you to verify your organization or activities in advance.
