Alpine Touring Record
Our representative toured Europe’s Alps on a motorcycle in the fall of 2022. Since he decided to go when snow was about to fall on the Alps, there was no time to plan. The week-long journey with a BMW R1200GS covering over 2,000 kilometers was a blast.

Day 1
Arrived at Munich Airport and took the train to AllroundRent. Left unnecessary luggage, departed on a BMW R1200GS around noon. Purchased an Austrian vignette (permit) from ADAC, Germany’s equivalent of Japan’s JAF, and headed onto the Autobahn. Snow was forecast for tomorrow, so the Alps had to be crossed today, but there was a traffic jam from the transport of wind turbines. Stopped by Salzburg for a glimpse of Hohensalzburg Castle. Arrived at the Großglockner High Alpine Road as shadows grew long.

Wanted to ride more of the magnificent mountain switchbacks, but had to find lodging. Went down the mountain to Lienz but couldn’t find anything, so returned and stayed at a small pension. It was late, so no dinner, just beer.
Day 2
Woke up late and headed west, passing by a Wafer factory in Röhrer. Icy rain and dense fog at the Jöfeln Pass.

Crossed the Timmelsjoch Pass and went to the TOP Mountain Motorcycle Museum at Hochgrubach. Over 500 motorcycles are on display, from Blaufunk Superior and Munich models to Eleven Honda.

Returned to Moso in Passeier and stayed at a lodge in Dorf Tirol.
Day 3
Rain.

Passed through Merano and headed to the Stelvio Pass.

Crossed the switchbacks and reached the summit in the rain.

Went through Santa Caterina and on to the Gavia Pass.

Had lunch at the Santa Apollonia spring, rode the stone-paved road to a lodge in Roverè.
Day 4
Fair weather and hot. Passed through Bergamo and went to Monza. The circuit was closed, so visited the Royal Palace.

Purchased a Swiss vignette (permit) at the Breggia border checkpoint and went to Camorino. Vodafone Germany’s roaming didn’t work in Switzerland, so switched to a Three SIM. Returned to Ciglione and savored the local specialty, Cordon Bleu.
Day 5
Went through the Gotthard Tunnel to Wassen. Aimed for the Susten Pass but it was closed due to snow. Inside the tunnel it was 35°C, but outside it was only 2°C. Coming down the mountain in a freeze, the weather cleared and the Oberland Alps came into view.

Rode along Lake Lucerne to Grindelwald. Took in a view of the Eiger North Face.

Went through Bern to Montreux. Visited the Queen Museum.

Day 6
Greeted the Freddie Mercury statue on the shore of Lake Léman and went to Gruyères.

Visited the H.R. Giger Museum.

Switzerland has speed cameras that shoot from front and back.

Beyond Lake Walen, viewed the Clariden Alps. Went to Vaduz Castle in Liechtenstein.

Enjoyed schnitzel in Füssen.
Day 7
Rain. Went to Neuschwanstein Castle.

Pilgrimage Church of Wieskirche.

Returned to AllroundRent in Munich.

In Munich enjoyed the BMW Museum and the beer festival Oktoberfest. Returned the motorcycle to AllroundRent, then traveled by train.
Despite the long journey and lack of planning, it was a great tour. Being able to cover a distance equal to that between Sapporo and Nagasaki with little fatigue owes much to the engineering excellence of the BMW R1200GS. From the ultra-high-speed Autobahn to narrow snowy paths, I truly felt the BMW slogan “the joy of driving” (Freude am Fahren).
